Mr Portland, as he was known, was cremated today, and many were there to say farewell to Les Ames, a dear, dear man, who devoted much of his life to the island and islanders. The Service at Weymouth Crematorium was wonderfully taken by Michelle Carpenter. We heard all about Les' extraordinary life and his remarkable achievements. His special wife of 75 years, Jean, was there with their two daughters Jo and Dee and their families and friends. I was very honoured to be asked to say a few words, which I did. Afterwards, we all returned to the Heights Hotel and enjoyed something to eat and drink. It was then time to leave and head of later in the evening to Swanage for another hustings. The event was well attended and many excellent questions were asked. Fell into bed at about midnight. A long day.
