Much work to do before a virtual meeting with Liz Ferdenzi, who is my direct contact with the migrant barge in Portland Port. We have agreed to speak regularly so I can keep up with how everything is going on board. Some constituents had voiced their concern about the size of the bus which takes migrants into Weymouth and back. I inquired whether a minibus would be more suitable than a double-decker; lower profile etc. Liz told me they had looked at this, but there were sufficient occasions when the number of migrants wanting to use bus made it more viable than a minibus. Liz also explained the situation with a former employee. As to whether the contract would be extended, she did not know. An announcement on that was expected in June. PMQs followed with the second eleven standing in for Sunak and Starmer. Dowden could not resist to prod the second home issue rumbling around Angela Rayner. She's a feisty lady though and stood her ground. I then remained in the Chamber for a Statement by the Defence Secretary, who was following up on yesterday's announcement about the increase in defence spending to 2.5% of GDP. I caught the Speaker's eye and my question and reply are on the website. Then to CR18 for a private session of the European Scrutiny Committee. While this was happening, the controversial Renters Reform Bill was being debated in the Chamber, with my colleague Anthony Mangnall making an excellent speech around the amendments he successfully got accepted by the Government. In other news, a teenage girl was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after three people were injured in a school stabbing. A few military horses caused "total mayhem" after bolting during exercises and charging through central London in rush hour. They had apparently bolted after a loud noise, which I was not clear about. Three men were arrested in connection with the deaths of five migrants in the English Channel yesterday. Former Post Office General Counsel Chris Aujard told the Post Office inquiry he was "deeply sorry" to the hundreds of sub-postmasters persecuted due to Fujitsu’s faulty Horizon system. And former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson was released on continuing bail after he appeared at Newry Magistrates’ Court to face a number of historical sex charges, including one count of rape. This really is a sad case. He denies the charges vehemently.
