Our regular weekly update with Dorset Council lasted more than an hour this morning. The Wareham Forest fire was the subject of our attention for a while and I voiced my concern at the lack of proper firebreaks and the on-going stupidity of some members of the public, who insist on not only using disposable barbecues in forests, but then leave them behind once used. All fires of any kind should be banned in forests like this. Ongoing concerns were also expressed about future funding for the council and that is a point some of us will raise again during a conference call with the Secretary of State. I was delighted to see that the Sandbanks ferry will be back in action next month, although concerns are being expressed at their attempt to raise fares again. And another solid business has voiced its intent to come to the constituency and a conference call is being organised. Not all these proposals will come to fruition, I suspect, but we'll do all we can to support them in the hope they do. The Government announced that it would continue to spend tens of billions of pounds well into the summer, to protect the jobs of furloughed workers affected by the coronavirus lock-down, but employers will have to start making a contribution from August. In Scotland, restrictions on who people can meet are being eased. The Prime Minister said a similar move would be made in England from Monday. Meanwhile, violence, looting and protests continued in the US after the death of an unarmed black man. A policeman was filmed kneeling on the man's neck after he'd been cuffed. The man is heard saying he cannot breathe. The pictures I saw also reveal that he had not resisted arrest and was no threat to police officers. These type of incidents must stop.
