One of the most pleasurable tasks as an MP is to visit schools and colleges. My highlight today was to attend the annual awards' ceremony at Wey Valley Academy in Weymouth. I'd been asked by Mark Chutter, the curriculum area lead - performing arts, and arrived in good time for the 1800 ceremony at 1730. I met Principal Tom Neill, who is doing a superb job there, and was ushered over to a table where some students were offering tea or coffee. I learnt they were saving up for a trip to Malaysia to help with a wildlife project and visit the jungle. Then, suitably armed with some tea, I was immediately surrounded by a group of boys, all members of the choir, who bombarded me with questions and a request for a selfie. I happily obliged. With the appointed time approaching, I ventured into the Hall, where many parents and prize winners had gathered. The guest of honour was Weymouth Mayor Cllr Kate Wheller, who gave a inspirational address prior to the prize giving itself. The presentation team, including the Mayor, then handed out numerous prizes on the stage, with Tom calling everyone up. The prizes were given on 'attainment' and 'progress' and the recipients clearly enjoyed themselves. It was a heart-warming event, with scores of smiling faces and contented parents. In other news, a 17-year-old boy from Oldham, who went missing in Spain in 2017, was found in France. This is an extraordinary story and I'm sure we'll learn more about it in the weeks ahead. The Prime Minister blamed industrial action by NHS workers for not being able to cut hospital waiting lists in England. I concur. Following a huge explosion on an industrial estate in South Wales, a body was found. A friend of missing woman Gaynor Lord said she "feels terrible" after cutting short a phone call from her on the last day she was seen. And, the Bank of England left interest rates unchanged at 5.25 per cent, where it has stood since August.
