My day began in the dentist's chair, where, frankly, I should have remained! What a tumultuous day in the Commons as the quasi-PM Oliver Letwin hijacked the Order Paper, with the collusion of the Speaker, and the real PM said she's off. This on top of the current shambles as Parliament continues to do all it can to prevent our departure from the EU, which was to be this Friday. The real fun and games, if you can call it that, began after PMQs. Future business of the House was discussed to 1500, with Letwin running the show. It was a debacle from start to finish, with a number of motions suggesting how we can move forward, all being defeated! PM Letwin looked deflated at the end of his day, although, regrettably, he has another on Monday. The fireworks really began when the Speaker tried to take Points of Order at the end of a long day, when tempers were frayed. Veteran MP and former Chief Whip Patrick McLoughlin, who does not take prisoners, clashed with the Speaker when he perfectly courteously tried to come back on a point made by Mr Bercow. A dismissive wave from the Speaker encouraged Mr McLoughlin to remain standing to make his point, with the Conservative Benches yelling encouragement. The Speaker had to relent in the end, but what a performance. Trust is running out here and the Speaker's use of his powers is raising serious questions about his suitability and partisanship. Of course, the most extraordinary part of the day came during a meeting of the '22 Committee, when Mrs May addressed us all. CR 14 was packed to bursting as the Prime Minister once again tried to persuade us all to back her deal. The meeting was in confidence, but as the news of her decision to stand down has already been broadcast, I do not think I am breaking any confidences to say that is exactly what she said. Back my deal and I will go, we heard. The deal is so bad that I'm not sure what her departure has to do with it, but certainly she has done her best and it is now time for A another to take over. I met colleagues straight afterwards to discuss events and again this meeting was in confidence. The final vote of the day was to extend our departure date to 12 April. I voted against. What a day, with our democracy under severe attack. The people did not call for all these motions to be debated; they just want out. The arrogance is breathtaking.
