The Conservative leadership race continued, not helped by a fractious television debate, with Sunak attempting to shout down Liz Truss. Why on earth they have agreed to do these, I have no idea. Sad news. Lord Trimble, the former first minister of Northern Ireland and Ulster Unionist Party leader, died. I met him on several occasions and a nicer man you could not hope to meet. At 1100 I headed to the Lobster Pot on Portland Bill to take members of the wonderful charity Island Community Action out to lunch. Fortunately, I took my motorbike as temporary roadworks near Dorchester caused a massive traffic jam, but I was able to muddle my way through, arriving only 10 minutes late. Two of ICA's mainstays were there; Kim Wilcocks and Jackie Carpenter. They were joined by a volunteer and her 94-year-old Mum, both of whom were charming. The restaurant was packed and thankfully Kim had booked a table. We had a fun lunch. Scampi and chips seemed the most popular choice. Back to the office afterwards for an hour long virtual meeting with my Association's Executive, who were keen to talk about the leadership contest. Meanwhile, Myanmar's military authorities executed four democracy activists accused of helping carry out "terror acts", state media reported. And research by the Nuffield Trust showed the NHS in England was short of 12,000 hospital doctors and more than 50,000 nurses and midwives.
