The attempted murder of Sir Salman Rushdie and the threat to author JK Rowling are ominous warnings of a world of intolerance and hatred that are becoming more widespread. There is no doubt that free speech is under attack and has been for some time. It must be resisted with all our strength and I am confident it will be. The UK became the first country to approve a dual vaccine which tackles both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant. Warnings have been issued for parts of south-west England as the heatwave breaks and is replaced with thunder, lightning and flooding. Farmers are crying out for rain and it is most welcome as fields need cultivated and crops like OSR sown. Heathrow Airport announced that it would extend its cap on passenger numbers for another six weeks as the aviation sector continued to struggle to cope with demand for travel. Plenty of constituency work to get on with and, of course, keeping up with the leadership race. Cannot wait for 5 September and for it all to be over.
