Another extraordinary day. And again it began with a run in the park. Rather necessary to clear the head as events in parliament continue to unfold. Today, Labour were debating a No Confidence motion in the Government and I put into speak. A routine morning to PMQs and then down to the Chamber. As always, Corbyn had an open goal and failed to score. When you think the Government had lost a vote last night on its flagship business - Brexit - by an enormous margin, you might have expected fireworks from the Opposition. What we got was a damp squib. The No Confidence debate began almost immediately after PMQs and I sat for some time before being called. We were down to four minute speeches, the PM having opened the batting for our side. My speech is on the website, so I won't expand on it any further here. After many speeches, wind-ups began at 1840. The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party made a good fist of it, to give him his due, speaking calmly and respectfully, but it didn't do any damage. Then Michael Gove got to his feet to end matters from our side. He let rip and clearly days of frustration and anger boiled over as he went for Corbyn in spectacular style. Some in Labour did not like it at all, crying 'shame', but Mr Gove pressed on and gave a barn-storming performance that the PM would have been proud of. Then the vote, which the Government won - 306 to 325. Huge cheers and on we go. I just hope that the PM has got the message that leave means leave and now we must get on with it. Continue to attempt to get a deal, yes. But if none forthcoming, take us out of the EU on 29 March. What a day that will be. So close now. Back to Dorset.
