Another disastrous day for democracy, our country and ultimately our Party. The reason: a speech from the PM. But more of that in a minute. Routine matters all morning and then a lunch with two charming constituents, Elaine and Jim Cole, from Weymouth. They'd bought me in an auction raising money for DCH. Both Elaine and Jim had served in HM Forces. The former had been a WREN for four years and the latter a pilot with with the Royal Navy for many years. My senior assistant took the couple on a short tour of the Commons before lunch. We then enjoyed our lunch while chatting away about a whole range of issues. We did touch on Brexit, but only for a minute! After lunch, the news many of us dread came through. Mrs May was going to make another speech, and not even in the Chamber, which is protocol and would have been more courteous. Not thinking matters could get much worse, I tuned in at 1600. Within minutes my jaw had hit the floor. Remaining in a customs union and a second referendum were being touted to seduce Labour MPs. The DUP was offered laws to deal with the so-called backstop, which are immaterial as EU law trumps ours. The reaction among colleagues was rapid and the conclusion blunt. The Prime Minister must stand down now before more damage is done. With Labour and the DUP also condemning May's deal, it was dead in the water. We learnt there was to be a Statement in the House tomorrow after PMQs. I will be there. I had a pleasant private meeting with the Speaker before heading out to supper with my brother.
