An early morning run and into the Commons. The Queen's Speech continued, but was delayed by a number of Urgent Questions (UQs). I attended the first, which was raised by Tobias Ellwood. He wanted an update on the Turkish invasion of northern Syria. With thousands of Islamist extremists under lock and key in Kurdish-run prisons, there is considerable concern as to what happens if they all escape. I asked the Foreign Secretary exactly what we and other countries were doing to ensure they did not. Mr Raab was unable to give a fulsome reply because, to be fair to him, he probably does not know what is going on. The situation is volatile, to put it mildly, and there's genuine anger at Donald Trump's decision to withdraw US troops, which gave the green light to President Erdogan to invade in the first place. I then enjoyed an interesting lunch with Russ Trent, the former Governor of HMP YOI on Portland, who has now returned as the area's senior manager. Our chat was confidential, but I can say we discussed all the issues you'd expect us to, not least conditions for prison officers and protection for them. Afterwards, I had a long meeting with my friend and colleague Sir William Cash. He is the most knowledgeable MP on Brexit matters and I sought and got a full brief on all matters that concern us both. Two more private meetings followed, one with a small group of colleagues, the other with the ERG.
