Perfect morning for my regular jaunt around the park. Two Opposition debates ran in the Chamber, with the last vote coming at 1900. A busy morning working on a range of constituency matters before lunch with some MPs and Peers. Back to a private session of our Defence Committee. Then two virtual meetings with constituents to discuss their concerns. Some ugly pictures have emerged from Wales where more than 100 balaclava-wearing thugs attacked police on a housing estate in Cardiff. The riot followed a car crash in which two teenagers died. The pictures brought back memories of my time in Northern Ireland, so shocking were they. An investigation is under way to find out what led to all the violence. I was called by a reporter from The Times who wanted me to comment on the news that Boris Johnson had been referred to police over fresh accusations of him breaking Covid lockdown rules. First, I do not comment without having full knowledge of all the facts and second I smelt a rat. Another leak? By whom? And why now? Disgraced former entertainer Rolf Harris, who was jailed for a series of indecent assaults on girls, died aged 93. And abroad, police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann were seen taking away a number of bags from a search site in southern Portugal.
