Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said that all pupils in all year groups in England will go back to school full-time in September. About time. Guidance on safety measures will be published in the next fortnight. Further funding of £1 billion has been announced to help children catch up with the education they have missed. For me, it was a sad day as we said farewell to Bernie Gale, who was part of my team here at home for a remarkable 48 years. The family had kindly asked me to say a few words at the Service, which I was honoured to do. We shall miss Bernie horribly. Just before the Service, I once again I joined the weekly conference call with Dorset Council and Dorset MPs. These meetings are proving very informative and helpful and I hope they continue in some form post COVID-19. We heard that schools were beginning to go back, that businesses were applying for help from a £6 million discretionary fund and that the pandemic and dealing with it had cost the council £60 million. Something to keep an eye on. We also chatted about the anti-social behaviour that is occurring around three hotels in Weymouth that are housing those from troubled backgrounds during the pandemic. All that can be done is being done, with all agencies involved, although some residents affected by this issue are understandably not satisfied. Then I hopped on to my motorcycle to Poole Quay to join my colleague Robert Syms, the MP there, for a photo by the boxed up statue of Lord Baden Powell. Both Robert and I are calling for the box to be removed. The funeral was at midday and taken very sensitively by our former vicar Hugh Maddox. As the rain swept in, I headed back to the office for my weekly telecon with some of my colleagues. With plenty more constituency work to get on with afterwards, I worked through to early evening. Good news regarding the virus in that the alert level has been downgraded from four to three. Under level three, the virus is considered to be "in general circulation" and there could be a "gradual relaxation of restrictions". The government is planning to relax its travel quarantine rules in early July for some countries. UK officials are talking to their counterparts in Portugal, France, Italy, Greece and Spain. However, the UK hopes to make an announcement on 29 June that it has secured a number of "travel corridors". Let's hope so for the sake of all those who work in this sector. My last thoughts today were of Bernie and of course his family.
