Richard Drax, Conservative MP for South Dorset today welcomed New Look’s plans to redevelop the old Mercery Road site. The design includes modern offices for New Look and other businesses, a major supermarket, family restaurant, hotel and leisure facilities. The old ambulance site will be retained in the plans, which will create and retain over 1000 jobs for Weymouth.
Richard Drax says, ‘Bearing in mind the dire economic state that our country is currently in, I am particularly delighted that these positive and optimistic plans have been put forward by New Look. Wealth and job creation is exactly what we – and in particular Weymouth – need right now and I hope that many of these jobs go to local people.’
Alastair Miller, CFO of the New Look retail group, says ‘New Look remains committed to retaining its strong presence and historical links to Weymouth. We believe these plans will help to secure not only our long term future in Weymouth but also to deliver a wide range of benefits for the town as a whole.’
The new Weymouth Gateway aims to create an attractive entrance to Weymouth off the new relief road. Weymouth residents have been invited to view and comment upon the plans this month.
