An interesting day, to put it mildly. It started quietly enough, but soon exploded into claim and counter-claim as details of the EU withdrawal deal leaked out. We knew enough by the end of the day to know it was not a good deal. The old chestnuts once again rose to the fore: the border in Ireland, customs union, ability to strike trade deals and of course the on-going lack of clarity that only sees tempers rise and patience become thinner. At a private meeting of the ERG, I don't think I have seen such anger among Peers and MPs as news leaked out on what can only be described as a sell-out. No doubt we will learn more in the days ahead and we understand that there's a meeting of the Cabinet tomorrow at 1400. They have to agree what the PM is proposing before it's sent to the Commons, where, by ll accounts, it will be voted down. Madness! The Opposition used one of their Chamber days to call for what we have already asked for, namely the legal advice that is guiding Cabinet ministers in their decision-making. There is on doubt that the atmosphere in the House is tense and we all await more detail on the so-called deal. In the meantime, we know enough to see where all this heading. On a separate note, I had a constructive call with the MD of First Bus, Marc Reddy. I wished to talk to him about fare rises and buses to Westhaven Hospital now that the beds on Portland have moved there. Regarding the first issue, Mr Reddy told me about a new 10-trip ticket that costs £19. That would reduce a single fare from Portland to Weymouth by £1.60, a normal fare costing £3.50. On the second matter, Mr Reddy is going to see if it's possible, with DCC's help, to fund a service from Portland to the hospital that fits in with visiting hours. He is going to come back to me.
