Early morning run and into the office for a busy day. After completing routine matters in the morning and a working lunch at my desk, I headed across to Mark Francois's office to sign a letter to the PM. We are part of a small team which is trying to better protect both our veterans post conflict and serving men and women who might be sent on operations in the future. This chasing of servicemen who served decades ago in N Ireland is nothing short of shaming, as too was the behaviour of disreputable lawyers pursuing those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are putting our feet down and saying this must stop and stop now. I then met the MD of Tods Defence, Peter Eckersall, who runs a highly innovative engineering company on Portland. After listening to him about some of the problems encountered with defence contracts, and the large sums of money which are wasted as a consequence of disjointed thinking and planning, I wrote to the defence procurement minister, asking for a meeting. It was helpfully granted and Peter had 30 minutes in which to make his points, which he did with great clarity and to great effect. After directing Peter to Waterloo, it was time to attend one of two confidential Brexit meetings. One followed the other. The ERG one was very well attended and lasted an hour. I then had the joy of joining two of my children and wife for supper.
