The front page of our local paper led with a data breach story, with animal rights' activists claiming they had the details of those involved in the badger cull. This was a wild claim and pure speculation, but shows the lengths to which some will go for their cause. The badger cull is necessary and is working. For too long farmers have been exposed to bovine TB with little or no assistance to tackle the devastating disease. A proper balance with all wildlife must be maintained, anyway. An uncontrolled deer population, for example, would see untold damage done to trees and crops, not to mention the danger to motorists. The PM returns from Saltzburg with the mocking tone of EU bureaucrats and politicians ringing in her ears. We have told her repeatedly that Chequers would not work, and so it has proved. There is now an opportunity to rethink our negotiating stance and try a Canada-style agreement that most of us can live with. Yes, the border issue in Ireland persists, but that can and would be resolved between two willing partners. The implementation period is the perfect time to further negotiate on this point. The EU must know that we could never accept a different border between the north and south of Ireland and the rest of the UK, and Mrs May is absolutely right to say so.
