A busy day, beginning with the normal run. A quick Xmas shop and into the Commons. Learnt that the Dorset CCG had decided to retain both paediatrics and maternity at DCH after Somerset health providers decided to review these services, as I understand it. This after CEOs at both DCH and Yeovil have been talking for some time to share these services in order to stop them being moved east to either Poole or Bournemouth. I and others have lobbied hard for these two services to be kept at DCH and the CCG clearly thought long and hard when whatever deal was being thrashed out fell through. I am delighted they have decided to come to a sensible conclusion and I know many constituents will think likewise. I was out of the House during PMQs, but I learnt that the PM did a great job on the last session before Christmas. Afterwards, it was straight on with the committee stage of the EU Withdrawal Bill, which has raised the tension a little. What baffles me is that this Bill is about putting EU law into UK law. It is not about how we leave the EU and there is no doubt to me and many others that a handful of staunch remainers are hiding under the cloak of so-called parliamentary sovereignty. Where have they been over the past 40 years or so as scores of EU laws are foisted on us without so much as a by-your-leave? I have some experience on this as I sit on the European Scrutiny Committee and see for myself the deluge of laws that are never properly scrutinised. I have signed a letter backing a call to commission another Royal Yacht. When money is tight, you might be forgiven for asking why? During her 40 years of service HMY Britannia conducted 968 official visits and clocked up more than one million miles at sea. On her last deployment to the Far East, commercial trade deals of some £2.75 billion were signed on board to the benefit of the UK. She was worth every penny and, as we leave the EU, what member way of waving the flag than another Royal Yacht. We shall urge the Government to establish a new national lottery to help pay for her - c£120 million - with no calls on departmental budgets. More concerns have been sent to me about SWR's proposed new train timetable. Having met the MD recently, I know they are taking all submissions very seriously. Votes came at c2100, then home to Dorset.
