SLOWLY, but surely, what we think, say and do is being politicised.
This freedom that we’ve taken for granted to date is under threat and it must be defended.
A perfect illustration is Labour’s proposal to toughen laws on ‘mis-gendering’.
That would become a hate crime, risking a jail sentence.
In short, not only must we tolerate these beliefs, but we must share them.
Already, those with ideas or opinions that are considered socially unacceptable or criminal are ‘cancelled’.
JK Rowling and former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who I’ve met, exemplify my point.
George Orwell called it ‘thoughtcrime’ and, though once unthinkable, it’s fast becoming reality.
In Wales, the Senedd has banned GB News from being shown inside the parliament building.
A spokesman said the channel was “contrary to our parliament’s values”.
This is naked censorship, nothing less.
There is no doubt in my mind that this move to stamp out our freedoms comes predominantly from the Left.
Although, to be fair, the Government’s legally binding climate targets will force the State to take more and more control of our lives, challenging our freedom to, for example, eat meat, drive a petrol or diesel car, go on holiday or heat our homes with gas or oil.
Neither the consequences of pursuing these unachievable aims, nor the full cost, have been properly considered.
I’m afraid that no Party is entirely immune from this worrying consensus that places its Big Brother boot on our faces.
Add to this meaningless equality laws, onerous health and safety rules and politically correct diversity and inclusion guidelines.
The drip, drip, drip of oppression, either intended or otherwise, is a very real threat.
However, I’m an optimist and there are signs that the silent majority have had enough.
It’s time now for them to have their say.
