An early rise and a tentative look out of the window to see whether I went to Weymouth my car or motorcycle. I took a gamble and by 0810 was on my way to the new council offices for an update on several local issues. Arriving in good time for the 0900 meeting. I met the three strategic directors, Stephen Hill, Martin Hamilton and Jason Vaughan. The CEO, Matt Prosser, was busy elsewhere and could not attend. I would like to put on record my thanks to all our officers, who are of the highest calibre and work diligently for the best of Weymouth and Portland. We chatted about many issues, not least the proposed shake-up of local authorities. They have already created a tri-council and will continue in the vein until something else is decided, like a new unitary, for example. Regrettably, opinions on that matter are divided and I foresee difficulties ahead. Then, it was off to the YOI to meet with POA branch chairman Tony Walker, a former Royal Marine. I met two prison officers with stories to tell and these will have to remain confidential for the moment. The information imparted does require action and I have followed on the various points raised. I would also like to put on record my respect, admiration and thanks to all those who work in the Prison Service. It's not an easy job, with blurred lines on aspects like discipline not making it any easier. I've always felt the Service is a bit like a forgotten army, as they do their good work out sight and sound, unless, of course, things go wrong. This visit took up much more time than I thought and afterwards I dropped in to grab a bacon buttie at a nearby cafe. Back to the office, where I was due to chat to a constituent's lawyer at 1400, but he pulled out at the last moment due to his workload. We rescheduled for next week. Then into Bournemouth for a rather boring eye appointment. Thank goodness I have a motorcycle as a car would have taken three times as long. Back to the office, where I worked through to the evening.
