Up and out early on a beautiful sunny morning. Hyde Park looks stunning. With the Commonwealth Heads of State here, London is a mass of police, sirens and traffic chaos. Into the Commons and after routine matters headed to the Whips' office for a briefing on today's Government business. Back to the office to 1130, when I descended to the Chamber and took my usual seat on the back row. There was an air of expectation today following Corbyn's drubbing during yesterday's anti-semite debate in the Chamber. A number of his own MPs expressed their anger and disgust at the Party's total lack of action to stop some appalling on-line abuse to Jewish Labour MPs. Of course, on our side, we knew that Corbyn would go for the Prime Minister over the windrush affair, in which it has been revealed that the Home Office shredded the documents of migrants coming to this country decades ago, so could not say for certain whether any of them had been deported since. This row has bubbled along for some days, so it was with baited breath that we waited for Mrs May, who was Home Secretary during the period, to explain herself. However, her reply to Corbyn caught us all by surprise, when she revealed, to Corbyn's utter astonishment, that it was Labour which had torn up these papers back in 2009! The Chamber exploded and Corbyn looked visibly shocked. Lacking the mental dexterity that those at the Despatch Box need at times like this, Corbyn flannelled on with his prepared questions and notes. It was simply a train crash and I almost felt sorry for Corbyn, as he eventually shrank back in his seat, clearly relieved that this exchange was over. A working lunch at my desk followed, before I headed to CR 19 for our European Scrutiny Committee meeting, which was held in private. During the afternoon, I ploughed through several constituency matters, wrote my weekly newspaper column and followed up on the Treasury Minister's invitation to meet him regarding Government money for infrastructure improvements to Weymouth. It's been a busy and fascinating week.
