Back from Moldova and Ukraine with the Defence Committee, I was dreading the Autumn Statement, to be made by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt. Before he stood up, though, the Prime Minister made a Statement on the G20 summit in Indonesia. I caught the Speaker's eye and commended Mr Sunak on his leadership in supporting Ukraine and told the House that, despite the huge level of support from us and the US, they were still short of military equipment and ammunition. My question and the reply I received are on the website. Then Mr Hunt stood up and delivered a Statement that Labour would have been proud of. Again, I was able to ask a question and both it and the reply are on the website. I am not a follower of Twitter, but was told by someone who is that my question was 'trending', which apparently was good news. In short, I do not believe raising taxes encourages productivity and growth and was disappointed at the Chancellor's line. I think the fact that Labour had not much to say in response to the Statement really says it all! Over in the US, Nancy Pelosi said she would not run again to be Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, after nearly two decades in the role And Gareth Southgate and England players met migrant workers in Qatar ahead of the World Cup.
