What an extraordinary day. It began with a run in the park, which prepared me well for what was to come just after 1700. Rumours that the Prime Minister was to call a GE had began to swirl early on, but no one believed it. Roll forward several hours and we all watched Mr Sunak come out of NO 10 in the pouring rain to call one. Whether that was a good time to make such an announcement is neither here nor there now. We have to get on with it and in the early hours of 5 July we will all know what the future holds. While all this drama was unfolding, my colleague Craig Mackinlay entered the Chamber in time for PMQs on prosthetic limbs. He rightly received a standing ovation. What a courageous and dignified man he is. Sepsis took both his feet and hands and I can only imagine what he and his family have been through in recent months. Right at the end, the Speaker called him and he made a very poignant speech. It was a very moving moment for all of us. Afterwards, I had my monthly meeting with Home Office officials who brief me on the migrant barge in Portland Port. I had several questions for them from constituents and they were going to send me something in writing in response. There was plenty more to do in the afternoon as the news of the GE spread far and wide. In other news, former Post Office boss Paula Vennells began giving evidence at the Horizon inquiry. And a second boy died after two children got into difficulty in the River Tyne in Northumberland. Tragic.
