Another sunny day. A conference call with my parliamentary team began the day. Some excellent news came through for hard-up dairy farmers. I, many colleagues and the NFU have been pressing Defra for a fund to help those dairy farmers who are hard hit by the closure of the service industry, such as cafes and restaurants. There are about 1,000 of them and now a new fund will hopefully see them through. I'm concerned at Government plans to allow certain prisoners out even earlier. There is some unease about this. We had two more trial votes and I was successful on both. I do not want this to become the norm, but it will have to do for the moment. So far as easing restrictions are concerned, the PM said the government will proceed with "maximum caution". Boris Johnson is due to announce plans for England's lock-down on Sunday, but ministers have insisted short term changes to measures will be "modest". Dominic Raab described media reports on easing restrictions as "not a reliable guide". He added that changes might vary between the different nations. We also heard today that the 400,000 surgical gowns ordered from Turkey did not meet British safety standards. Up to half of the personal protective equipment (PPE) order was flown to the UK last month, but has not been given to NHS workers and is stuck in a warehouse. As more and more people express concern about the economy, the Bank of England has warned that it's heading towards its sharpest recession on record. The coronavirus impact would see the economy shrink 14 per cent this year, based on the lock-down being relaxed in June. Scenarios drawn up by the Bank to illustrate the economic impact said Covid-19 was "dramatically reducing jobs and incomes in the UK". At the end of the day, I attended one of our regular conference calls with the CCG. We heard that there are 330 cases of COVID-19 in Dorset Council's area and 420 in our neighbour's. 130 deaths have been recorded in hospitals and 42 in care homes. Finally, and sadly, VE Day celebrations will be muted tomorrow because of the lock-down. I cannot raise the flag on the Tower because the pole broke in strong winds when we were commemorated my Mother's passing. But I am planning to visit the Memorial in Weymouth, to pay my two minute tribute to the huge sacrifice made by the wartime generation.
