More and more rumours abound as this so-called Withdrawal Deal and Political Declaration are torn apart, and rightly so. I suspect there is panic in No 10 as the voters themselves see straight through this deal and, like me, fear it will leave the country in the worst of all places, half in, half out, of the EU. One hears of groups of MPs on both sides of the House plotting this and that, when we should be all be acting together and executing the referendum result. Sadly, and to this place's shame, many are actively trying to stop Brexit, and this I find hard to accept. There are those who voted Remain who are acting in good faith and with great dignity by accepting the referendum result, but many in the Labour Party, quite apart from ours, are not acting in good faith and this when all three main Parties promised a referendum and to respect the result. Anyway, a busy morning before meeting Paul Rose and Timothy Hurst, both from Global Marine Group, which runs the two cable-laying vessels, based at Portland. Their concern was the national minimum wage. Why? Because a significant number of the crews are Filipino and are paid at a separate rate. These two vessels are an important part of the port's economy, quite apart from being the only company to have both laid, and be able to repair, underwater cables that are crucial to the UK. The minister listening intently and will let us know where the Government and law stands. At 1630 and 1800 I attended two Brexit-orientated meetings. At the second, the ERG had produced a most informative document on what was seriously flawed with the deal and this is on my website. It's a sobering read. One junior Government minister I bumped into this morning told me he was going to support the deal because we could leave the Backstop at any time, simply telling the EU to ... well I won't repeat what was said here, but you can guess. I was amazed to hear such an uninformed opinion from a minister and seriously wonder how many others are in the same boat. Supper with friends ended another extraordinary day.
