Regrettably, today brought more bad news in that the UK has the highest number of coronavirus deaths in Europe. There have been 29,427 deaths recorded across the UK - a figure Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said was "a massive tragedy". The newest total for Italy, previously the highest in Europe, now stands at 29,315. But experts say it could be months before full global comparisons can be made, and I concur with that. Today, I attended a private session of our Defence Select Committee. Using zoom we discussed three topics and I'm glad to report that we are all getting the hang of these virtual meetings. At midday, I joined parliament virtually for Health Questions. A press statement I sent out later on my question is on the website. It refers to nursing numbers and the loss of beds at Portland Community Hospital. I next had a virtual meeting with Mark Hopwood, the MD of South Western Railway. He had helpfully sent me a letter giving an update on future services and refunds, which is also on my website. He explained there would be more trains at the end of this month, especially for commuters. And he was optimistic that the row over guards could be resolved. Many constituency issues followed before a final zoom meeting with a small group of colleagues. This is a private meeting and a chance for colleagues to sound off in private. Finally, another figure has had to resign after meeting his mistress at his home. It was Professor Neil Ferguson who advised the Prime Minister on lock-down. His modelling of the virus's transmission suggested 250,000 people could die without drastic action. Meanwhile, the airline industry took another serious knock with Virgin Atlantic announcing more than 3,000 job losses in the UK and ending its operation at Gatwick. This news follows BA's announcement that it too might pull out of Gatwick. Finally, a new NHS app, which traces the spread of coronavirus, was introduced on the Isle of Wight today. Council and healthcare workers will be the first to try it - with the rest of the island able to download it from Thursday.
