Up very early for my morning constitution as I had to be in Westminster Hall by 0930, fully prepared for the 90 minute debate on our blue light services. My colleague Richard Fuller led the way with an excellent speech where he raised many legitimate concerns about the merging of blue light services. Peter Bone was in the Chair and I was called third. My speech is on the website, including an intervention I made on Mr Fuller, so I won't repeat what I said here. Nevertheless, I do think it's worth saying that there isn't a concensus across the emergency services on this proposal and I share these concerns. The blue light services in Dorset have already made giant steps so far as collaboration is concerned and where practicable we should go there. One contentious matter is that the fire service should be added to the PCC's remit. While we have an excellent PCC, I share these concerns too, not least because I was against the introduction of PCCs from the start as I feared politicising the police force. Anyway, we are where we are and the debate will continue no doubt. There were seven speeches before the shadow minister and then Mike Penning, himself a former firefighter, concluded the session. Due to this debate, I sadly missed a regular meeting with our local FSB organisation. Next up was a meeting with Ed Funnell from Stagecoach, which holds the current SW Trains franchise. The franchise is up for grabs and Mr Funnell had come to find out what our needs were so far as future services are concerned. Well, as you know, I have been pushing for a faster service between Waterloo and Weymouth now for more than a year and SW Trains has been very helpful. We are some way down the track, having involved the minister, Network Rail, the LEP and MPs up and down the line. Our best hope is to upgrade the line from Weymouth to Yeovil Junction where trains can then run directly to London via Salisbury. This is possible and a lot of work is going on in this regard. Mr Funnell listened politely for some time and was most positive. We now know that FirstGroup is also in the running for the franchise, which will start in June 2017. No sooner had I said farewell to Mr Funnell than an email came in from FirstGroup asking for a meeting, which of course I shall organise. Both bidders need to know what we need. An afternoon spent on a myriad of constituency matters until the last vote just before 1900.
