With Bank Holiday move to next weekend, today was a working day. After my staff conference call, we all got down to dealing with many constituency matters. Probably the most common are inquiries from those who are still falling through the Government's safety net, not least pubs. At 1100 we had another trial vote, which, for me, worked. A miracle! The Government announced that a test version of the NHS's coronavirus contact-tracing app has been published to Apple and Google's app stores. Council staff and healthcare workers on the Isle of Wight will be invited to install it on Tuesday, ahead of a wider roll-out on the island on Thursday. There are privacy concerns in some quarters and it will be interesting to see how many people on the island take it up. In other news, the government is now paying the wages for nearly a quarter of UK jobs under a new programme aimed at helping people put on leave due to the coronavirus pandemic. About 2.5 million people registered last week for the scheme, bringing the total claims to 6.3 million - 23 per cent of the employed workforce. The Nightingale Hospital in London is expected to be placed on standby in the coming days, and will no longer be admitting patients. The hospital, which opened on 3 April with space for 4,000 beds to treat Covid-19 patients, could resume operations again if needed.
