A relatively early rise and off to our Ambassador's residence for breakfast at 0800. The residence, Villa Wolkonsky, is a most impressive place, set in a stunning garden, with what remains of a Roman aqueduct that used to transport fresh water into the city running through it. An amazing feat of engineering, there cannot be many residences with this remarkable structure in their garden. Walking through the grand entrance, we were greeted by the Ambassador, The Rt Hon. the Lord Llewellyn of Steep OBE. What a charming man and one who over the next two days generously gave us his undivided attention. Afterwards, we went to the HQs of the Italian airforce to meet Lt Gen Luca Goretti, who is responsible for the organisation, training and equipment of 44,000 men and women in Italy and overseas. He had more than 3,000 flying hours under his belt, including over 2,000 hours on the Tornado. After a fascinating hour, we were taken on a guided tour of this magnificent building. Back into the minibuses and off to a two hour session and sandwich lunch with a notable and highly respected think tank. With time to research their topics properly, the brief we had most extremely interesting and informative. Then it was off to meet the Chairman of the Defence Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, the Hon. Antonino Minardo. A father of four, who started his political career in 1999, he spoke through an interpreter, who we later meet at the Ambassador's evening reception. Her CV was quite extraordinary. A truly remarkable lady. Another interesting hour before we headed back to our hotel. A bath and change and then back to the Ambassador's villa for a reception. It was well attended, with some of those we'd already met present. It was fascinating talking to as many of the attendees I could. Business, military and diplomatic were all represented. The event ended at 2100 and we headed to a nearby restaurant for supper. Another intriguing day.
