The National Coastwatch volunteers are literally the salt of the earth. I am clearly biased, but the three teams along my constituency coastline are the most special. One of them on Portland, run by the remarkable Geoff Peters, had made me an Honorary Watchkeeper back in 2020, but the official title had never been assigned to me, mainly due to Covid. There are two other Honorary Watchkeepers: Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, KCVO, CB, CSM, ADC. So, I was mightily touched and deeply honoured to be similarly recognised. I was tempted to head to the Watchtower on my bike, but the forecast was not exactly enticing, so went by car. I arrived at 1125 and soon met up with Geoff, his lovely wife, Pam, and other members of the Watch. Upstairs in the Tower itself, I was asked to unveil the new camera, which is located on the old lighthouse on the Point. This is a new, multi-thousand pound piece of equipment that allows the Watchkeepers to see down the coastline and miles out to sea. It can zoom in to an incredible degree, giving the Watchkeeper a clear and accurate picture at what they are looking at. Then, Geoff, presented me with an engraved salver, dated 2020. I was very moved. Afterwards, we went downstairs for the most delicious sandwich lunch and there we chatted away for several hours. I did not want to leave, it was all so enjoyable, but leave I had to do as I'd promised to visit a constituent on the island who needed my help. Twenty minutes later, I was in my constituent's house listening to the issue. It concerned ASB and I said I would do all I could to address the problem. The day was gone by the time I let myself out and I headed back to the office to follow up on constituency matters. In other news, another of my colleagues, Luke Evans MP, said he had been a victim of 'cyber flashing and malicious communications'. This followed the revelation that William Wragg MP had fallen for the ruse and sent an explicit picture of himself, in addition to revealing the mobile numbers of some other colleagues. The on-going concerns about the future of Thames Water did not get any better with news that its parent firm had defaulted on debt. There were warnings of commuter chaos ahead of fresh train strikes. These are totally unacceptable. And the IDF dismissed two senior officers over the killing of aid workers.
