Early rise and then in warm sunshine I headed to Langton Matravers to visit St George's Primary School. I much enjoy visiting this lovely school and it brings back many memories of my initial start in politics when, as the Conservative candidate for S Dorset, I fought, with many others, to prevent the school from being closed. Helen Wemyss is the relatively new headteacher and a most charming woman she is too. I never fail to be impressed at the school because I always find a warm and professional atmosphere, attentive and well turned-out pupils and teachers clearly dedicated to their jobs. After a chat, I was taken on a tour, dropping in on several classes to chat to the children and teachers. One group had prepared some questions and I was asked some extremely pertinent questions on a whole range of issues, which I was delighted to answer. Concerns were expressed at the lack of a pedestrian crossing outside the school, where pupils frequently walk across a busy road to some playing fields. I have written a supportive letter to the county council. The school is also keen to see if it can purchase some land at the back which belongs to the former prep school, the Old Malt House. The visit lasted some two hours, after which I popped into the local post office where I grabbed a sandwich. The drive back was truly picturesque, with the ruins of Corfe Castle bathed in spring sunshine.
