Freedom day! We leave the EU tonight at 2300 and I for one enjoyed a drink with friends in the evening. But, as I say in my column (on the website), it's time now for the country to unite. There are no longer Brexiteers and Remainers, or there shouldn't be. Sadly, there are some who will harp on and on and on about staying in the EU, but that is not going to happen. Time for them to move on. First stop today was the bus depot in Weymouth, where I had arranged to meet the deport manager, FirstGroup's operations' manager and Cllrs Rob Hughes and Sue Cocking, Portland's superb Mayor. We'd tried to meet last year but the election put an end to that. Our concern was routes and the stops they use, especially from Portland. We were delighted to hear that two new bus stops were to be erected along Osprey Quay, with buses diverting off the main road to accommodate passengers going to businesses and the new store there. We also discussed buses to Westhaven Hospital now that the beds from Portland have gone there. The company will look at that. And a stop near the railway station was another ask. Afterwards, Rob, Sue and I went to the council offices for a private meeting. Then, it was across the constituency to Moreton Village Hall to meet farmers for the first of our quarterlies in the new parliament. It was well attended and hosted brilliantly by the new local chairman Ian Baggs. The meeting went on for some time, the subjects varied and sometimes concerning, not least the future of farm support. Understandably, farmers want a level playing field with other countries. In the evening, I went to supper with some friends and watched Boris make his speech at 2200 before we left the EU officially an hour later. After all the rancour, division and propaganda, we'd got there. Back in 2006 I adopted my battle-cry, "We want our country back," and tonight we did just that.
