A rather fraught day began with my usual early morning run in the park. After routine matters dealt with in the office, I went down to the Chamber to support my colleague Alister Jack's Bill on road traffic offences. Rather than expand on it here, Mr Jack's whole speech is on the website and you can read for yourself the Bill that I have added my name to. His 10 minute speech followed a session of about an hour where MPs paid tributes to our former Speaker Lord Martin of Springburn, who has died. In the afternoon, I attended a pre-meeting of like-minded MPs to discuss Brexit issues. There is genuine concern that the PM might bottle it and go for some form of customs union, which is unacceptable to me and many others. It's time in this place that we fronted up to these Remainers, who are doing all they can to derail Brexit in both Houses. It's a shabby and dishonourable way to behave after a vote back in 2016 made it very clear we would be leaving the EU in its entirety. These politicians know that and their aim is clear, whatever they claim to the contrary. Our regular meeting of the ERG was postponed for 30 minutes as voted. However, at about 1830 we did all meet up and of course discussed the relevant Brexit issues. At about 1845 I dropped down to the Lower Whips' Office to attend another meeting with the Chief Whip, Julian Smith. The issues were similar and I made it very clear that if we betrayed the referendum result there would be catastrophic consequences for our Party and for us, individually. It is a matter of honour that we deliver the referendum result; it's as simple as that.
