My first task was to draft my weekly column for the local paper. I then dealt with a mass of correspondence, before driving to Swanage. Had a most interesting time meeting residents and had plenty of feedback. I then met former postmaster Henk Agelink, who was the post office manager at the resort back in 2005. Tragically, he, too, was caught up in the post office scandal. After monies had inexplicably disappeared, he was sacked. The trauma can only be imagined as his life, and that of his dear wife, Jenny, imploded. Henk and Jenny have borne this injustice with huge courage and dignify and I found our meeting in a coffee bar very moving. He was accompanied by a longtime friend and supporter, Helen Peters, who could not have been nicer. I learnt that Henk's case is being looked at but, because he was not actually prosecuted, he's concerned he might be brushed off with a few thousand pounds. Naturally, I will do all I can to help him and ensure that he is fairly compensated for this awful injustice. In other news, the families of those who died in the Nottingham attacks expressed their anger after triple killer Valdo Calocane was given a hospital order. Consultants in England voted narrowly against a government offer aimed at ending their long-running pay dispute. And, around 1,600 jobs are to be cut across the Lloyds Banking Group branch network.
