Had a most interesting and fascinating visit to a company on the Granby Industrial Estate called Tecan Ltd. I was met by MD Neil Walker, who could not have been nicer or more accommodating. I soon learnt that the business started in a garage more than 50 years ago. I quote from the company's brochure to explain what it does: "From humble beginnings, Tecan's pioneering photo chemical machining (etching) processes were developed in response to the growing demand for fine-featured, flat profile precision metal parts." Employing c100 people, the company is only one of three of its kind in the UK. The work is highly specialist and exact, requiring huge volumes of water and a vast amount of electricity. Neil took me upstairs where I met other senior members of the team and, with coffee in hand, listened to the presentation about what the company did. Joy, who had been there for more than 30 years, then took me on a guided and most informative tour. The industrial estate comes into my constituency when the boundary changes come into force at the next election. A huge and important employer, today was not the first time I have visited a company there. After more than two hours, I headed back to Association HQs at Winfrith for two surgery meetings. That was followed by a meeting with my Association chairman and a few others to discuss the future.
