Another extraordinary day! It began with a run, and then into the Commons by 0855 to attend a delegated committee that I and other colleagues had been selected for. It did not last long, but prevented me from attending another meeting held by the Dorset LEP, which was a shame. At 1040 I joined a meeting chaired by former MP and friend Danny Kinahan to hear more about a paper that he and my colleague Sir Henry Bellingham have written to try and solve this toxic question of historic allegations of wrong-doing by members of our Armed Forces. It is a disgrace that former soldiers are still be hounded today about their time in N Ireland some 30/40 years ago, and it has to stop. I am glad to say that the Defence Select Committee is now looking at this and Danny intends to work hand in hand with them. Today the Trade Bill was in the Chamber and after all the drama of yesterday, more was expected today, and we got it. Newly appointed George Hollingberry presented the Bill extremely well and efficiently, before the Remainers in the House began to make their points. This Bill was important to get through as it will enable us to get on with Brexit after we have left. One new clause, No 18, was a problem, though, and, had we lost the vote, would have kept us in a customs union if a deal with the EU could not be reached. The PM could not have made it clearer that we are leaving the single market and the customs union and to claim that this new clause was supporting the Government was for the birds. In fact, had the Government lost the vote, the consequences could have been very serious indeed. The 12 Remainers were told this, but chose to blunder on. This inability to accept we are leaving the EU is quite extraordinary and damaging to both the Party and country. However, during a series of votes during the afternoon, the Government managed to win all but one. Relief all round! The language from one or two colleagues is unnecessarily unpleasant and personal. I heard one serving minister referring to the likes of Jacob and I as "Brexiteer Taliban". I am not sure those fighting for what the people of this country voted for can possibly equate to the Taliban, whose cruelty and intolerance are legendary. But such is the mood in the House at the moment, which saddens me.
