An early morning run began the day. Spring is here as daffs and blossom appear at last. Much warmer too. At 0710 I was talking to the new presenter at BBC Radio Dorset, Steve Harris, who has replaced the lovely Alina. I was questioned on the Defence Select Committee's damning report on the Government's plans for the army up to 2020. The Committee was highly critical, saying the plans had not been thought through properly and were largely the result of financial restraint rather than our strategic need. MPs also questioned why we were getting rid of regulars when we had not recruited sufficient numbers of reserves. I and other MPs have been saying this for some time now. Into the House, a brief stint in my office, before I went to the Chamber to get some of Philip Hammond's statement on a leaking reactor in one of our submarines. Afterwards, James Arbuthnot, the very capable chairman of the Defence Select Committee made a statement on his report. We then had about 15 minutes to question him on it. Clearly, he was in a difficult position, but he took no prisoners and spelt it out in pretty blunt terms. Sadly, Mr Hammond had left the Chamber! Afterwards, I went back to my office until about 1500 and then headed to Dorset in my car. Once home I worked through until the evening on casework and correspondence.
