With the Culture Secretary Maria Miller under the spotlight for her expenses, I was concerned to read in yesterday's press that one of the Minister's aides and Cameron's communications' director both, in effect, threatened reporters investigating the story. The implication was that they should remember who was dealing with the Leveson inquiry report - ie Ms Miller. I have said very firmly that I do not believe legislation is needed to implement Leveson's recommendations and this example highlights why. I do not trust parliamentarians to make objective decisions when many of them have axes to grind. A truly free press is a cornerstone to our democracy and if Ms Miller should fall because of it, so be it.
