This afternoon at about 1500 we were voting in the Commons when word reached us that there had been an incident and proceedings were suspended. No one knew what had happened, but it was clearly serious as the Chamber and Division Lobbies were locked down, with hundreds of MPs trapped inside. We all reached for our phones and very soon an horrific picture began to emerge. A policeman stabbed, his assailant shot dead and carnage on Westminster Bridge after the same man drove into innocent pedestrians on his way to Parliament. It was a shocking afternoon and all our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who have been killed and injured in this appalling outrage. Terrorism, or whatever you call this form of warped hatred, must never, ever win and the best way we can defeat attacks like this is to carry on as normally as we can. I'm afraid the seat of our democracy will always be a target for those intent on destroying our way of life and I've known that something like this was inevitable. Sadly, there will be more before this madness finally runs its course. Anyway, tonight, we stand together, our heads bowed in respect and sadness to the fallen and injured. I would like to pay special tribute to the police who guard us here in Parliament. As today has proved, they never know when an attack might come, yet they do their duty diligently and with great courage. What a horrible end to the day.
