New York City’s TriBeCa area, formerly home to the twin towers, has again come under attack by Islamic terrorism. A 29-year-old Uzbek man, who gained entry to the US in 2010 under a ‘diversity visa lottery programme,’ drove at speed along a cycle lane, killing eight people and maiming and injuring many more on Tuesday afternoon. Meticulously following the ISIS guide - apparently still freely available online - he had been planning the attack for weeks when he hired a pickup truck and mowed down his victims. Arabic notes, declaring, “Isis will endure forever,” were found in the truck’s cab. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is right to describe this as a cowardly attack on innocent people and to pledge that New Yorkers will carry on defiantly. But President Trump too has a point when he says that ISIS cannot be allowed into the US to wreak further havoc. Like it or not, America acts as a global magnet, and her people have a right to live securely within her borders. Mr Trump has promised to step up his controversial, ‘extreme vetting’ and to dismantle the diversity immigrant programme immediately. Despite his sworn duty to defend his country, he is already being accused of racism.
