Sep Blatter, President of FIFA, is likely to keep his job in today’s election in Zurich, despite the stench of corruption around the organisation he heads. He is strongly supported by Africa, Asia and unsurprisingly, Russia, which is due to host the 2018 World Cup. Despite indictments by the US Justice Department against 18 of Mr Blatter’s underlings for taking £100 million in bribes and kickbacks, Mr Blatter has insisted he’s staying. Only concerted action by other members of football’s world governing body looks likely to change the status quo; UEFA is threatening to withdraw from FIFA and boycott the World Cup. In addition, and possibly more painfully for Mr Blatter, sponsors like Visa, Hyundai and Coca Cola, which says that the scandal has ‘tarnished the mission and ideals of FIFA,’ are threatening to withdraw their support. This is indeed the ugly face of the beautiful game and, as the man with whom the buck stops, Sep Blatter should go at once.
