The Prime Minister's battle to stop arch federalist Jean-Claude Juncker from becoming the European Commission president has failed and I don' think many of us are surprised. Good on David Cameron for trying, but this appointment was a side-show compared to the real problem, which is the EU itself. And, in that regard, I am surprised that such a fuss has been made about Mr Juncker, when frankly nothing was going to derail the federalist express thundering down the track, with Chancellor Merkel hunched over the steering column. She's a clever lass, there's no doubt about that, buying up countries and sticking them in the Eurozone, where they're answerable and indebted to German economic might. It'll be interesting to see where Mr Cameron goes now. He talks tough, but the test will be to see whether he really does stand up for Uk plc and lay out exactly what powers he wants repatriated before he supports a British exit. We all know that this recent appointment makes any negotiations along these lines a fantasy, so we now need real leadership and plenty of bulldog spirit to lay our cards firmly on the table. I believe that when we leave the EU - and we will - and thrive, other countries in time will follow. Only then will common sense prevail and the people of Europe be free again.
