I am as shocked as everyone else over recent revelations that suspected IRA terrorists have received, what in effect is, a keep out of jail card from the previous Government and this. This flawed policy came to light recently when John Downey, a suspect in the Hyde Park atrocity, had his prosecution dropped because he'd been sent a letter offering immunity. Mr Downey denies murdering four soldiers in 1982. Nearly 200 so-called 'comfort letters' have been sent to 'potential wanted suspects', 38 of them under this Coalition Government. I served three operational tours in Northern Ireland and I never trusted the peace process when it came because for such entrenched views to be silenced so quickly something had to be going on behind the scenes. And so it has proved. This really is a grubby affair, which serves no one and betrays those who were killed, which included Anthony Daly, a colleague of mine at the time. The fact is the British Government was prepared to do virtually anything to stop bombs going off on the mainland. Naturally, I can understand the motive, but do the ends justify the means? I, personally, don't think so. I also join the call for the Bloody Sunday investigation to be closed immediately. It would be a gross injustice if soldiers from many years ago are dragged before the courts while suspected thugs and murderers enjoy the quiet life. That would be the final straw, surely.
