One of the most extraordinary icons in recent years, Nelson Mandela, has died. I never met the man, sadly, so I don't know him and shall be brief. I will leave the detailed eulogies to others. All I would like to say is that the world will mourn a man of great dignity and charisma. It's hard to believe that he spent a quarter of his life in jail, locked up by his South African tormentors, who saw him as a terrorist. Mr Mandela disagreed. He was a freedom fighter. And whichever side of the argument you are on, to come out of prison after so many years and live and preach peace and reconciliation is something quite remarkable. I suspect his country did not move on as far as he would have liked, with many still living in abject poverty and those on the extreme edges of politics still talking of violence. Still, South Africa is more at peace with itself today than it was before its transformation led by Mr Mandela. I hope and trust his legacy will be one of continued peace and prosperity for all, both black and white.
