What further evidence do we need than the current debacle in Cyprus to realise the EU is doomed? Imagine the same Orwellian scenario in this country whereby all deposits are taxed up to 10 per cent. There would be outrage, probably civil disorder and political meltdown. I have to say that I think we are still fooling ourselves in this country, which teters on the abyss of financial meltdown if and when interest rates rise to combat inflation, prompted by printing more and more money. The Budget tinkered at the edges and was not nearly radical enough to stimulate the economy by putting more money back in people's pockets, whether they be individuals or businesses. We are still borrowing vast sums of money and Government expenditure is still unaffordable and unsustainable, however we may dress it. Could a Cyprus happen here? It's not impossible but we're certainly not going to stop bumping along the bottom until we release the supply side of our economy. This would take political courage, leadership and vision, all of which are in short supply for a number of reasons. Certainly, the Coalition does not help and, as I predicted on day two of my fledgling career, has prevented the Conservatives from taking the necessary long term action our country needs. The EU federalist nightmare is over, finished, dead, deceased and the sooner everyone realises this the sooner Europe's shattered economy will begin to recover.
