The cries of "soak the rich" ring out more and more as Budget day approaches. And now the Lib Dems want access to private homes so that inspectors from HMRC can crawl through an Englishman's castle to value and tax items like jewellery. And don't forget Mansion Taxes and inevitably other taxes on everything an individual owns, especially if that person is perceived to be wealthy. This is a return to the bad old days and the politics of envy, which in the long term stamps out entrepreneurial flair, aspiration and job and wealth creation. With the economy in the Doldrums at best, I cannot understand how any sane person can espouse such stupid policies and expect anyone, but the envious, to support them. George Osborne has to be radically Conservative in the forthcoming Budget, or we will lose the next election. I have argued for lower taxes for years and never has that been more important. In simple terms, the individual not only has a right to spend her/her own money, but they do it so much better than Government, which squanders so much of it. The Left demands control over everything we do and earn, while the Right used to be a standard bearer for freedom of the individual. Next month will be Osborne's chance to show he really is a Conservative and not a rudderless hulk floating towards the rocks.
