I suspect that horse has been passed as beef for many years. Now, as one revelation follows another, something akin to panic has set in. First, this is clearly not a health issue and no one has died, thankfully. The problem is an extended food chain which is open to exploitation by the unscrupulous. Never has the adage 'buy local' been more pertinent and no doubt there will be a move this way to ensure the food we buy is indeed what it says on the package. British farmers are battling weather, bureaucracy and fluctuating prices, while at the same time trying to produce food at an affordable price, and I am sure they would welcome an increase in sales. So, my advice, for what it's worth, is pop into your local butcher and buy local.
