Democracy took a step backwards on Friday. The appallingly low turnout for the police and crime commissioners was a kick in the face to all politicians who attempt to foist an ill-conceived idea on the electorate. The grim reality that we have done nothing more than politicize the police force under the guise that we the citizen will be better served leaves me cold. This desire to make the police more accountable is because they have been more and more politicized - with a small 'p' - over the years and have forgotten what their main function is - to prevent crime and catch those who commit it. Now, we have a man or woman in charge of appointing or sacking a chief constable who, more than likely, has had no experience of policing at all. It beggars belief and with their hands on the budget, too, these commissioners will, inevitably, be able to affect operational matters, despite what we're told to the contrary. I can only think that the only person who's breathing a sigh of relief today is Hull's Chief Constable!
