There is no doubt where the BBC stands on Europe, but I was a little taken aback on Wednesday, the morning of the Prime Minister’s speech on Europe, by their obvious partisanship. The only guest invited to comment on Radio 4’s Today programme during the speech was Lord Mandelson, Labour’s former EU trade commissioner. Not that any of us heard much of the speech – the programme kept cutting away to other, more ‘interesting’ items, like Doctor Who. For me, the final straw was Evan Davis, saying that ‘no wonder’ the Prime Minister had described the EU speech as ‘tantric,’ insinuating that it was because it took so long to get going. I found Davis’ attitude in particular rude and disrespectful. This was an important speech, of great relevance to the entire country, and Davis’ job as a journalist and presenter is to report the facts, not his prejudices. Even Lord Mandelson said that it was, ‘game set and match to the Eurosceptics’. Unusually, he was the only guest on Today, until the very last few minutes, when Bernard Jenkin MP and Andrea Leadsom MP came on. To be fair, they might have insisted they didn’t want to comment until after they’d heard the speech, but the presentation did smack of bias, even if it was unintentional.
