Today’s Royal wedding was well timed indeed.
The spectacle of our young Prince marrying the girl he loves is just the tonic the nation needs during these austere and difficult times.
Even the weather perked up last week, hopefully signalling a change in the national mood.
Everyone cheered up, and today promises to be a national holiday like no other.
I, for one, am delighted to celebrate the wedding of our future King.
Years ago, as a soldier, I swore to defend the Monarchy.
I would do so again.
I believe the Royal Family is a force for good.
The thought of an elected British President fills me with horror.
Our island history, forged by kings and queens through the centuries, binds our country together like no other.
Today, our Royal Family stands outside politics, concerned only with the public good.
And there’s no better example of selflessness and devotion to duty than our current queen.
Long may she reign over us.
Similarly, her parents sustained the nation throughout the war years.
And now her grandson, William, a RAF search and rescue pilot, has put a stamp on his young life by taking a bride.
This happy day will have a poignancy to it, as some parts of the ceremony are bound to evoke memories of Princess Diana.
But we will all be cheering for the next generation, while respecting the past.
Prince Charles has been a wonderful father to his two sons, and one day it will be his turn on the throne, a role he will excel at.
Sadly, there are those who want to impose their views on the day itself, whether they be republicans or Muslims with extreme views.
However, our Royal Family has survived far worse and will continue to do so, of that I am sure.
A reported 2.5 billion people worldwide are watching this wedding today.
They obviously think we Britons have something to be proud of, and so do I.
