Richard Drax, MP for South Dorset, today welcomed the news that Nothe Fort is to receive £50,000 in funding from the Government’s Coastal Communities and Coastal Revival Funds.
The bid, made 18 months ago by Weymouth Civic Society, is for funding for enhancements to the northern side and terraces of Nothe Fort.
“This is excellent news,” says Drax. “I understand the intention is to remodel the northern earthworks at the Fort and use the ‘spoil’ to enlarge the existing terraces which overlook Weymouth’s harbour, beach and town. This will help with the Fort’s use as a centre for community activities by local groups, and as a wedding venue.”
“The money will also go towards floodlighting of the northern elevation of the fort during the hours of darkness and for downlighting the Fort sign. “
“There will also be a disabled access ramp from the Fort reception to the terrace for the first time.”
“I would like to sincerely congratulate Jonathan Turner and his team for a remarkable achievement in putting together this successful bid which will allow Weymouth residents and visitors to enjoy Nothe Fort even more in future.”
The £50,000 awarded this week to Nothe Fort by the Coastal Communities Fund and the Coastal Revival Fund forms part of the Government’s pledge to invest a quarter of a billion pounds in the Great British Coast by 2020.
